Since October last year, all Tesco stores in the Czech Republic have offered a 10 percent discount for students over eighteen with an ISIC student card from Monday to Friday. Based on student feedback, this is now changing. Starting Monday, April 22, students can also shop with the discount on weekends.
“Students often gave us feedback that they do their bigger shopping on weekends, for example when they arrive at the dormitory on Sunday. That’s why we agreed with the Tesco retail chain to extend the discount to weekends. Otherwise, after six months of the discount’s operation, we can say it has become one of our most popular student benefits. For this reason, our cooperation with Tesco is also expanding to Slovakia and Hungary,” said Radek Schich, director of GTS Alive, which issues ISIC student cards.
The student discount applies in all Tesco stores to the entire purchase, including discounted items. Students most frequently buy dairy products, fruits and vegetables, non-alcoholic beverages, sweets, and salty snacks.
Zuzana Grinčová, marketing director of Tesco Czech Republic, stated: „Given the very positive response and great interest in this offer among students, we decided to extend the discount to weekends as well. The 10% discount coupon with the ISIC card is among the most used within the Clubcard app. Students find the digital form of interaction in the Clubcard app very attractive and also appreciate our efforts in sustainability and environmental protection.“
More than a third of students shopping with an ISIC card started using Clubcard newly. The discount is most often used by students shopping in Prague, Brno, and Hradec Králové, specifically in the local Tesco hypermarkets. Their average purchase amounts to 500 CZK.
A GTS Alive survey of 624 students over 18 showed that three-quarters of them have used this discount at least once. A third use it every week. The vast majority of students are willing to travel for the discount even if they do not live or study near a Tesco store. A third of students have used the 10% discount coupon for shopping together with their parents, the rest have not.
Over 40% of students in the survey said they generally shop for groceries about once every few days. A quarter shop roughly once a week. Every fourth student buys food even daily or every other day. Most students spend between one and three thousand crowns per month on groceries. Young people very often try to buy healthy food, ignored by only about 15% of students.
