Do you understand dress codes?

Do you understand dress codes?

Did you get a wedding invitation with a dress code and don’t know what to wear? Are you missing the differences between business and smart casual? Then feel free to print out our dress code guide and you’ll finally be clear on which outfit to choose for your next social event.

Dress code rules

Casual

If you're going to an event with a casual dress code, you don't have to worry too much about what to wear. Basically, you can wear anything you feel comfortable in. Jeans, sneakers, a T-shirt — you can't go wrong. Still, there are a few rules of etiquette worth following. Leave loud, political, or supposedly funny slogans on clothing in the closet.

Business Casual

Business casual means neat clothing suitable for everyday wear in the office. An outfit that’s not too formal, but still appropriate for a business meeting. Guys can go for solid-colored trousers and a polo shirt, button-up shirt, or sweater, along with dress shoes. Girls have more options thanks to a more varied wardrobe, but knee-length dresses and skirts with a blouse or shirt will always be a good choice. Makeup should be subtle, but don't be afraid to add jewelry and high heels.

Smart Casual

This dress code allows a mix of formal and informal pieces — a smart solution, so to speak. Guys can go for well-fitting jeans or cotton trousers with a blazer and shirt. Girls can make good use of cigarette-cut pants or culottes and blouses. Black jeans paired with a more striking top are also appropriate. Even though smart casual is less formal than its cousin business casual, stick to neutral colors and elegant cuts. Leave bold colors and overly decorative pieces in the closet this time.

Business/Informal

The more formal the dress code, the fewer options you have. For guys, that means a suit with a white shirt and sticking to brown, blue, gray, and black. Girls should choose knee-length dresses, a pencil skirt with a blouse, or a women’s suit and heels. As for colors, you can definitely go for something bolder, but then it should be a solid-colored piece.

Semi formal

This dress code is often required at weddings or in upscale restaurants. Guys should go for a dark blue or black suit, paired with shoes and a belt in the same color, and black socks. For girls, cocktail dresses are appropriate — just make sure they’re not too short. Definitely avoid dresses that stop mid-thigh; ideally, they should end a few centimeters above the knee. Choose the color of the dress based on the event you're attending. Little black dresses are fine for a restaurant, but for a wedding, it's better to go with pastel shades.

Formal/Black-tie

If you're going to an event that requires black tie, we have to admit — we're a bit jealous. For guys, the only acceptable choice is a black tuxedo with a crisp white shirt, black cummerbund, bow tie, black Oxfords, and cufflinks. For girls, this dress code calls for long evening gowns. There's no limit when it comes to color, and suitable fabrics include velvet, silk, and lace. High heels are a must.
