The Upper Synagogue, also called the Old Synagogue, the Dómská Synagogue or the Altschul Synagogue, is located in a row of houses on Husova Street, which once formed the main axis of Mikulov's Jewish quarter. It was built in the sloping terrain just at the foot of the Castle Hill, in an exposed location where one of the access roads to the castle led. For liturgical reasons, it is oriented slightly oblique to the other terraced buildings. The construction of the Upper Synagogue dates back to 1550, later the building underwent several reconstructions and acquired its current Baroque appearance in 1719-1723, when it was rebuilt after a devastating fire in the Jewish town. The imposing interior space was rendered in a quadruple dome, which is glazed into a four-column pillar in the middle of the hall. This unique architectural design makes it the only synagogue of the so-called Polish (or Eastern) type in the country. Today the synagogue is used for exhibition purposes and throughout the year it hosts a number of cultural and educational events organised by the Regional Museum in Mikulov.
